Government
Government (description and makeup): A Third Republic established after the fall of Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War (1870). The Constitutional Laws of 1875 established a regime based on Parliamentary
Supremacy.
Leaders (Government/Military):
Ferdinand Foch, a French army officer. As marshal of France he was supreme commander of the Allied armies at the close of World War I.
Aristide Briand, a French statesman. In 1925 Briand helped negotiate the Locarno treaties by which France and Germany were bound to peaceful settlement of disputes.
Henri Philippe Petain, a French army officer. Pétain became a national hero during World War I for his successful defense of the key fortress of Verdun.
Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre, a French army officer. Joffre took command of French armed forces at the opening of World War I. Joffre had the courage to take responsibility and act decisively in times of crisis, but he lacked brilliance or imagination.
Raymond Poincare, a French statesman. He was president of France, 1913–20, during the World War I period.
Reasons for Entering the War: First off, France found itself at war against Germany,because Germany declared war. Secondly, after Germany declared war on Russia, France helped Russia against Germany because of the alliance that they had formed. Lastly, France was a part of the Entente Cordial which later became known as the Triple Entente when Russia also became an alliance.
Alliances: The Franco-Russian Alliance, along with the Anglo-Russian Entente, and the Entente Cordiale formed the Triple Entente between the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland, France and Russia.
